There is an undocumented adjustment you can make to the cloud coverage area by editing a config file located at:Ĭ:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\HiFi\ASNFSX\Options\FSXOptions.CFG

For most of us, the default coverage works well and provides the most accurate results. ASN being reporting station oriented (as most generators are) does not always know what the weather is beyond this data so errors on the side of reduced cloud coverage. Some areas of the world are more stable and predictable than others.ĪSN will also display forecast for Interpolated stations, but be aware these are based on averaging nearby TAF stations so are not as accurate, especially if the nearby TAFs are more than 5 miles away.īy default, ASN extends cloud coverage which is not reduced or limited by other nearby stations with less coverage to 100 miles.įor those of us who often fly in remote areas of the world, or weather dominated by off-shore coastal systems, this limitation can sometimes make the weather appear to originate from the land rather than the ocean. These forecasts are not 100% accurate because they are created by people guessing the results of trends and interpreting computer models. You'll also see if you'll be departing or landing in daylight or darkness. You'll also find this forecast hours slider on the map screen.

This feature makes it very easy to see not only what the conditions are now, but what they MIGHT be at the end of your flight, or if conditions are not currently suitable for take off, how long you should wait before they are acceptable. Slide the marker to a position of your choice and the text information at the top of the screen (including the graphics representation of the visibility/cloud conditions) will change interactively as you move the slider. ASN makes this simple by providing a time slider "Forecast Hours" at the bottom of the screen. Metars can be difficult to decipher sometimes and TAF reports can be even more confusing. If there is TAF data, the information will be displayed in the bottom right text area.

You can find out if your airport has a TAF report by viewing the Conditions screen and entering an ICAO code for your airport. You can learn more about TAF from this Wikipedia link: If your departure or destination airport has a TAF (terminal aerodrome forecast or terminal area forecast) report associated with it, ASN provides an intuitive, interactive interface for displaying future weather.
